Brits

BRITS is a 10 year examination of British life through black and white street photography, taken between 1969 and 1979. I landed on the shores of England as an 18 year old, who had illegally left the USA with a draft dodger. Culture shock was enormous, and it took 2 years to feel I was able to navigate and understand this new homeland. In 1973, while working as a photo technician at a technical college in London, I met Paul Trevor, a student there, who invited me to join him in a community photo project. The end result was "Down Wapping", an exhibit and book about the area of London that was being gentrified and cleansed of working class inhabitants. After that, I worked with a group of women photographers on two shows, Women" and "Men, by women photographers". BRITS is a combo of all those efforts and more. They are published in 3-4 volumes available from Royal Cafe Books. The books are in the permanent collection of the TATE, The V & A Museum,  and the MOMA.
